Press Release - USFS FAM and NIFC Launches Next Generation Enterprise Geospatial Portal: WildFireSA
This next-generation application is packed with enhanced tools for wildfire situational awareness and response, and introduces new features designed to improve user experience and access to real-time data.

Feature Updates

  • Lightning Panel in WildFireSA Advanced - Multiple user requested improvements to filter, sort, and download include:
    • Lightning sub-layer visibility now is more intuitive adjusting to the min-max ranges to better match what is on the map.
    • Changed symbol for positive and negative in the Lightning panel to match the symbols on the map.
    • Improved time range filter for custom time ranges in additional filters.
    • Added filter by positive and negative strikes in additional filters.
    • Can hover over Lightning Intensity (kA) histogram bars to filter strikes.
    • Can hover over positive and negative count boxes to filter by polarity.
    • Allow download for 14 days (currently is 7 days). If downloads over 1-7 days and 7-14 days, data will be downloaded in two files in the zip file.
    • Download is now based on what you see and have filtered.
  • Add the "Add Data" download capability to the Layer List widget.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed issue with downloading in KML/KMZ format when used with extent filter.
  • Minor tuning of pop-ups to show better in dark mode in WildFireSA Advanced Web Map.
  • Fixed banner in mobile where click to close banner is blocked in portrait mode.

Coming Soon

  • AFF aerial wildfire flight locations within WFSA Resource Tracking (Summer 2026).
  • Personnel Resource Tracking icons will change to reflect Personnel Resource Type.
  • Discovered root of source NWS Watches & Warnings data error where sometimes is anomalistic. It is a root NWS database mapping code issue and has workaround coming to provide a custom URL to avoid when source URL is incorrect.
  • New GOES Heat Detection service which will include quality control procedure to discard detections associated with industrial activity (ex., steel mills, gas flares, power plants) as well as potential false alarms caused by solar panels and other highly reflective surfaces, while also correcting for potential omission errors in the automated satellite fire products.
  • Semi-Annual release on mobile and performance improvements.
  • EGP Data Catalog curated service analysis and updates based on input USFS RMA Dashboard Comparison and user feedback inputs to lower clicks and support ease of adding data and saving map presets.
